Why Oysters?

Because they’re the ultimate “friend of the coast.”

The number of people living on the coast has increased by 40% in the last 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. With the population increase, the amount of toxic run off from coastal cities and towns has increased 10-fold, placing an unprecedented amount of strain on coastal resources.

The good news is that nature has provided the filter-feeding oyster to keep our coasts clean and teeming with life. A single oyster filters up to 50 gallons of coastal water per day, removing the toxins from run off and creating a coastal habitat where hundreds of smaller species –barnacles, mussels, crabs–can thrive.

Along with filtering water, oyster reefs help:

Oyster Reefs in Decline

Over the last 50 years, oyster populations have dropped significantly from overharvesting, disease and habitat loss. This isn’t good for the long-term sustainability of our coastal ecosystems.

When recycled shell is placed back into the coastal ecosystems it provides a place for baby oysters to land and regrow new oyster beds!

Oyster Reef Restoration

We partner with the SCDNR and other organizations throughout the East and Gulf coasts to “Put 'Em Back” –replant oyster reef habitats by recycling used shells. For every product purchased, we donate the funds needed to plant 10 sq. feet of oyster habitat.

We also sponsor oyster shell recycling boxes throughout the South and other grass-roots organizations dedicated to living the “Put 'Em Back” mantra.
